$2.45 Million Class Action Settlement for Data Sharing

Overview

Nearly half a million patients have earned a settlement victory with respect to sensitive information provided to a healthcare agency being shared with a third-party. The case was heard by the North Carolina Business Court (Judge Adam M. Conrad) and resulted in a $2.45 million class action settlement.

In 2022, current and former patients of WakeMed Health & Hospitals sued the company, accusing it of allowing tracking software from Meta (owner of Facebook) on its website and patient portal. The software, called Meta Pixel, collects online data. By using Meta Pixel, the plaintiffs allege that WakeMed gave Met unauthorized access to personal and medical data for advertising and marketing purposes.

Judge Conrad’s approval of the settlement ended the three-year action.

Scott Harris and Jim DeMay of Bryson Harris Suciu DeMay were among the attorneys appointed as class counsel.
